The 2016 Optimist Nations Cup is returning to the Sailing World Cup- Melbourne and aims to be bigger than ever! Last year the Optimist Nations Cup was trialled and deemed a great success. So much so that two teams from New Zealand have been confirmed with interest from New Caledonia also in the mix.
This year the event has two fleets Open and Intermediate. Competitors in the Open fleet are eligible to enter in the Opti Nations Cup. All team members must be in the Open Fleet. To enter this event Optimist sailors must first register for the Sailing World Cup Final regatta. Once all members of the same team have entered, one representative can then enter their team of six into the Optimist Nations Cup. The total points from the fleet racing series of the first five boats in each team shall be added together and the team with the lowest total score wins!
The cost per team comes to $60AUD. More than one team per country may enter but athletes may only compete for one team at a time.
Despite an emphasis being placed on international entrants interstate competitors are welcomed to also form a team and compete.
AOIDA (Australian Optimist International Dinghy Association) invites any and all nations and states to form a team and register for this event. Along with racing, competitors can also enjoy a variety of Optimist social events and group gatherings.
To make the trip to Australia worthwhile there are also a number of other regattas competitors can compete in before and after the Sailing World Cup Final. These include the George Mac Regatta and the Optimist Nationals Championships.
